Brown Widow Spiders In Supermarket Produce?
There is no need to obsess too much about having an unpleasant encounter with Brown Widow Spiders in supermarket produce. The tropical regions where bananas are grown are also the home of some pretty scary creatures including some kinds of poinsonous spiders, but it is important to understand that banana growers do not want to kill off their customers. When bananas are harvested they are immersed in water which washes off most of the critters that might have been living in the banana trees. When the produce companies ship their products they chill them in order to keep them from ripening too quickly. This slows down any hitchhiking insects so much that it is almost like they are asleep. When packed out in the store the fruit is for the first time coming up to room temperature, so that if you do encounter a spider it will most likely be in a state where it is just waking up and not very dangerous.
